How We Research

Last updated

Every Retract Wise page follows the same research process. This page explains it so you can judge how much weight to give what we publish.

1. Start from the reader's decision

We begin each guide by identifying the decision or problem behind the search: which type to buy, whether a quote is fair, why the awning will not close. The page is then structured around answering that decision quickly, followed by the detail needed to act on it.

2. Gather primary sources

  • Standards: EN 13561 (external blinds and awnings), EN 13363 and EN 14501 (solar protection), AATCC TM183, AS/NZS 4399 and ASTM D6603 (UV protection of textiles), NFPA 70 and NFPA 701, the IRC and IBC.
  • Manufacturer documentation: installation manuals, service guides, motor programming instructions, technical data sheets and warranty terms from awning, motor, fabric and screen manufacturers.
  • Government and industry research: including the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Saver guidance and the Attachments Energy Rating Council.

3. Cross-check figures

Numbers such as typical sizes, prices, lifespans and wind thresholds are compared across multiple sources. When sources disagree, we give a range and explain the cause of the spread. Cost figures are presented as planning ranges, not quotes.

4. Do the math, and show it

Many questions about awnings are geometry and physics: front bar drop from pitch, shade depth from sun angle, wind pressure from speed, heat gain from window area. We calculate these explicitly and publish worked examples. Our calculators use the same formulas, documented on each tool page.

5. Safety review

Content that involves spring-loaded arms, working at height, structural fastening or electrical connections is checked against manufacturer guidance and code requirements. Where a job carries real risk, we say so prominently and recommend a qualified professional.

6. Maintain

Pages carry a last updated date and are revisited when products, standards or prices change, or when a reader reports an issue. Material changes are listed in the corrections log.

What we do not do

  • We do not publish testimonials, star ratings from undisclosed sources or invented test results.
  • We do not accept payment for coverage.
  • We do not provide engineering certification. For structural or code questions on your property, consult a licensed professional.
