Editorial Policy

Last updated

Our job is to give you accurate, useful and independent guidance. This policy describes the standards every page on Retract Wise is held to.

Principles

  • Usefulness first. Every page should answer a real question better than anything else you could find, with specifics: numbers, decision rules, worked examples and the trade-offs that matter.
  • Accuracy. Facts are checked against primary sources. Where figures vary (prices, lifespans, typical sizes) we present ranges and explain what drives them rather than false precision.
  • Transparency. Calculations show their assumptions. Our own analysis is labeled as such, so you can tell it apart from sourced facts.
  • Independence. No company pays for coverage or influences our conclusions.
  • Safety. We flag hazards clearly, especially stored spring energy, working at height and electrical work, and we say when a job belongs to a professional.

Sourcing standards

We rely on, in order of preference: published standards (for example EN 13561 for awnings and external blinds, AATCC TM183 and AS/NZS 4399 for UV protection, NFPA 70 for electrical work); manufacturer installation, service and technical documentation; fabric mill data sheets; and government research such as the U.S. Department of Energy's guidance on window attachments. We do not cite statistics we cannot trace to a credible source. Each article lists the main sources and standards consulted.

Original analysis

Where we add our own analysis, such as the shade coverage tables or the arithmetic behind our calculators, we publish the method so it can be reproduced. Callouts marked "Retract Wise analysis" contain this kind of original reasoning.

Updates and review

Every article shows its last updated date. We review guides when standards, products or typical prices change, when readers report problems, and on a regular schedule for our most-read pages. Minor edits (typos, formatting, clarifications) update the date without a log entry; material changes are recorded in the corrections log.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it promptly and, for material errors, note the change publicly. You can report an error through our corrections page.

Brands, products and conflicts of interest

  • We do not accept payment, free products or other benefits in exchange for coverage or recommendations.
  • Brand overviews are neutral. We describe what a brand is known for and tell you what to verify, rather than repeating marketing claims.
  • Advertising, where shown, is clearly separated from editorial content and never influences what we write.

Experience and expertise

Our guides draw on the documented practice of installers, service technicians and manufacturers, translated into plain language. We avoid claims of testing we have not done. When we describe how systems fail, we explain the mechanism so you can judge the reasoning yourself.
